one of the parable of Jesus in Luke chp 5

I dun understand this parable... anyone pls explain.... ^^

5:36And he said to them, in a story, No man takes a bit of cloth from a new coat and puts it on to an old coat, for so the new coat would be damaged and the bit from the new would not go well with the old.
5:37And no man puts new wine into old wine-skins, for fear that the skins will be burst by the new wine, and the wine be let out, and the skins come to destruction.
5:38But new wine has to be put into new wine-skins.
5:39And no man, having had old wine, has any desire for new, for he says, The old is better.

  1. Oo... LoL... I can't remember a sermon that explained this parable. But a brother explained in short, that it basically talks about the old law. But didn't have time to elaborate the whole meaning.

  2. I don't know what verse 36 means, but i think i know 37-39.

It's because new wine skins still contain pores, and they'll absorb the wine in it, whether old or new. And seeing as new wine is rarely better than old wine, it is only fitting to put the less useful its kind. Something like let the spiritually dead bury their dead (Luke 9:60).

Jesus was talking about the suitability of the situations. Seeing as He was yet to be crucified and still present, He saw no real purpose to fast (as fasting was a custom that one performs under situations of remorse or when praying for something).

Then again, i *think it's like that. Anyone want to confirm?

  3. i think the meaning of verse 36 is almost the same as 37-39 .. as when you attach the new cloth to the old one then the whole cloth will end up looking weird .. it also destroys the look of the new cloth .. so you cant attach a new cloth to an old cloth .. that's what i think

  10. Bro Brian enlightened me with this:

Jesus was questioned about fasting, so He was explaining to them that they didn't have to fast like how the Pharisees fasted. Customary fasting was simply a routine for them, and so they probably fasted without any purpose, this is meaningless.

The Pharisees didn't understand or accept that Jesus was their Messiah. Jesus is the Bridegroom. Jesus was with them so there was no need to fast.

In short, Jesus was trying to tell the people that they ought follow the teachings in the New Testament but not to carry on with the OT practices. For it is now a period of Grace, it is the heart that truly matters concerning this.
